Stop Facebook Marketplace Scams: Protect Your Sales

A scammer contacts you, expressing immediate and often overly eager interest in an item you've listed, usually without negotiating the price.

They create urgency or a false sense of security, perhaps by claiming to be out of town and needing a "shipper," or by sending a convincing but fake payment confirmation screenshot.

They then request personal information (like your email for a fake payment portal) or claim to have "accidentally" overpaid and ask you to refund the difference via a separate payment method.

If you comply, you either lose your item without receiving real payment, send money back to the scammer, or provide details that lead to identity theft or account compromise.

The buyer offers to pay more than your asking price, often for "shipping costs" or to "hold" the item.

They insist on communicating or completing the transaction outside of Facebook Marketplace's secure messaging and payment features.

The buyer claims to have sent payment, but you haven't received official confirmation from your bank or payment service.

They pressure you to ship the item immediately, especially before funds have fully cleared and are visible in your account.

They send you a link to an unfamiliar "payment portal" or website asking for your banking login details.

Their Facebook profile seems new, has very few friends, or contains generic/stolen profile pictures.

Always keep communication and all payment processing within the Facebook Marketplace platform when possible, or use trusted, official payment methods.

Verify all payments directly through your bank or trusted payment service's official app or website; never rely on buyer-provided screenshots or emails.

Never send money back to a buyer, especially if they claim to have overpaid; legitimate payments can be reversed if there's an error.

Report suspicious buyers and messages to Facebook Marketplace immediately, and block their profile to prevent further contact.
